Gaelic for Black (Dubh) Dagger (Sgian) as the handle was originally made
from Black Bog Oak or the word Black meant secret (as in blackmarket).
The Sgian Dubhwas traditionally
worn as a secret weapon and hidden upon the person, unless in company of
friends, when it was shown and worn in the top of the hose for all to
see.
